A Brief History of Modinagar
Modinagar is quite popular in UP as well as Delhi. This place was earlier called as Begumabad and in the year 1945 it was renamed as Modinagar. It was Gujarmal Modi who was the pioneer for the development and the progress of the town and constructed sugar mill in the year 1933. Modi did not stop with that and he had plans for the growth of the town through his commerce as well as industry which also provided employment opportunities for the people living in Begumabad.
In 1945, post second World War, British Government acknowledged the services of Modi group of companies and wanted to honour Gujarmal Modi with knighthood. However, Modi insisted that he be conferred with “Raja Bahadur”. Since he did not meet the criteria for the same, the government named the colony created by him as Modinagar and further conferred him with a title “Raja Bahadur”. So in the year 1945, they renamed Begumabad as Modinagar after Gujarmal Modi. Apart from ensuring the development of the city into industrial hub, Modi also ensured that all the ancillary benefits needed for the welfare of the people of the town were made available.
